Twilight Criteriums Are Back!

Tonight, after a break of several years, Pegasus ran a “test” criterium at the AP Showgrounds.  We were hugely excited by the interest coming through the Club webpage and Facebook page in the run up, clocking up a massive 2300 hits!

The weather played a role, and having threatened all day long, light rain started falling about an hour before the start.  That no doubt played on some riders’ minds, but with the rain clearing, we were able to run two races.  First up, we had the “C/Ds” duking it out.  The race quickly split, with Harrison Steadman breaking away from the front and staying away through the race, eventually lapping the field.  Behind, two groups formed and largely worked well together, though were just lacking a bit of speed to close their gaps.  It was great to see some new faces, and welcome young rider Luke Price, who was experiencing bike racing for the first time! Well to all of you, we hope you had some fun tonight!

With the threat of more rain, and the small fields, the final two races were combined into one race of 12 riders, lasting 20minutes plus 3 laps.  Following the first neutralized lap, Ollie Jones was straight away off the front, but after a few laps, the chasing pack had closed down the gap, and the pace eased off slightly.  That wasn’t to last, and coming down the start finish straight, an attack by Jake Marryatt blew the race apart, with only Ollie Jones and Simon Anderson able to keep with him, and a number of smaller chase groups formed, but were unable to close the move down.  In the final lap, Jake tried to shake his two companions, but found Ollie Jones too strong, and in the final sprint to the line, Ollie took it out, winning the “coveted” Chocolate Kiwi.  Having been stranded just behind the initial attack, Greg Manson managed to stay away from the riders in the “middle” race to take out the B/C riders race.

Thanks everyone who braved the weather, it was really great to get the Twighlight Criteriums up and running.  We’ll be back next year, and with the better weather and longer daylight hours, we hope to have bigger fields, more grades (including a women’s grade and a junior grade if numbers allow) and more racing!  So watch this space, it isn’t that long till summer comes around!
